Dark, gently evolved fruit rolls out first in the 1999 Château Gruaud Larose, with blackcurrant, blackberry and a touch of cherry wrapped in notes of leather, earth, smoke and cool mint, giving a clear sense of its classic St-Julien roots. Medium to full in body, it feels savoury and refined rather than showy, the once-firm tannins now polished into a long, mineral-led finish that still has a nice, racy energy despite the challenging harvest year.
Roast leg of lamb with herbs de Provence; Duck breast with cherry jus; Wild mushroom and thyme risotto
Château Gruaud Larose is the grand vin of this historic Saint-Julien deuxième cru classé, a Cabernet Sauvignon–led blend (with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) from a single, gravelly plateau overlooking the Garonne. Today farmed organically and increasingly biodynamically, it’s known for producing dense, structured, ageworthy wines that marry blackcurrant and dark plum fruit with notes of liquorice, tobacco and spice, evolving toward great finesse and complexity with time in bottle.
