Monfortino Barolo Riserva 2019 Vintage Overview

2019 OVERVIEW

Tasting the 2019 Giacomo Conterno Monfortino Barolo Riserva feels like encountering Nebbiolo in its most severe yet aristocratic guise: dense red and black cherry, dried strawberry and rose are wrapped in layers of graphite, dark earth, tea leaf and subtle spice, all driven by piercing acidity and formidable, tightly-knit tannins. This vintage’s blend of Francia power with a significant share of Arione brings both iron-backed structure and a surprising sense of poise, promising a wine that will move from stark, mineral intensity today toward haunting complexity with long cellaring. Profoundly concentrated and currently quite closed, it is a reference-point Monfortino built for decades, not years.

About Monfortino Barolo Riserva

Monfortino Barolo Riserva is Giacomo Conterno’s legendary, traditionally made Nebbiolo, sourced from the steep limestone-marl slopes of Serralunga d’Alba (principally Vigna Francia and, in recent years, also Arione) and produced only in top vintages. Fermented in large wooden vats with long macerations and then aged around seven years in large Slavonian casks, it is renowned for its immense structure, profound complexity, and extraordinary longevity, standing as a benchmark for classic, ageworthy Barolo.
