In the 2013 Château Trotanoy, dark plum and blackberry are tightly framed by a serious, gravelly structure, giving the wine a composed, almost reserved feel. As it opens, hints of redcurrant, rose, graphite and gentle smoke creep in, with a firm but refined tannic grip that promises more nuance over time. This is a quietly confident Pomerol, less showy than great years but impressively poised for the vintage and built for unhurried drinking.

Château Trotanoy is a profound, Merlot-dominant Pomerol from the Moueix family, drawn from a tiny 7.2-hectare vineyard of dense clay-and-gravel soils over iron-rich “crasse de fer” that are famously hard to work but give the wine its power and depth. Typically displaying deep color, velvety yet massive structure, and complex layers of dark fruits, chocolate, truffle, and tobacco, it is considered one of Pomerol’s top crus and is renowned for its remarkable longevity and intensity.
