Taut yet generous, Mauro Veglio’s 2017 Barolo Paiagallo layers ripe red cherry and strawberry with hints of citrus peel, floral top notes and a touch of spice and savoury earth. The palate is full-bodied but lifted, its firm, grainy tannins and energetic acidity giving shape to the fruit and leading to a long, slightly bitter-edged finish that reflects the warm, structured nature of the vintage. This is a Barolo that feels serious and a bit angular today, but with clear promise as it mellows in bottle.
