Taut and quietly powerful, the 2023 Kumeu River Mate's Vineyard Chardonnay layers cool-toned citrus and white flowers over a core of concentrated, small-berry fruit, all wrapped in a silky yet chiselled texture. The low alcohol and wet-year restraint give a racy, mineral finish that feels long, precise and promising rather than showy, suggesting real complexity to come with time in bottle.

Maté’s Vineyard Chardonnay is Kumeu River’s flagship single-vineyard white, from a low-lying, north-facing Mendoza-clone Chardonnay site replanted in 1990 on the Brajkovich family’s original Kumeu property. Typically the last parcel harvested and cropped at very low yields, it produces a Chardonnay of striking density and length, marrying citrus and stone-fruit intensity with flinty, creamy complexity and a structure that rewards extended cellaring, often drawing comparison to great white Burgundy.
