Le Petit Haut Lafitte 2023 Vintage Overview

2023 OVERVIEW

Deep cassis and blackberry define the 2023 Le Petit Haut Lafitte, wrapped in a firm, polished frame of Cabernet tannin that gives the wine a serious, almost gravelly backbone. Notes of dark chocolate, tobacco leaf, violets and graphite add complexity to the ripe core of fruit, while a long, chalky-saline finish keeps it focused and savoury. This is a powerful, structured vintage for this cuvée, built more for the cellar than for early, easy drinking.

About Le Petit Haut Lafitte

Le Petit Haut Lafitte is the Cabernet-Sauvignon–led second wine of Château Smith Haut Lafitte in Pessac-Léognan, crafted from younger vines but vinified and aged with essentially the same care and methods as the grand vin. Typically around 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot (with red and, more recently, white versions), it aims for a more ‘left bank’ graphite-and-tobacco profile over the estate’s gravelly hill soils, offering earlier approachability while still reflecting the depth, smoky earth and dark-fruited elegance that characterize thi…
